Crocheted Amphora Series

Classical Greek vases have been an ongoing source of inspiration for Bonnie Meltzer for well over a decade. The elegant shapes of the urns influence the outside perimeter of Meltzer's work (most are not rectangular) and the Classical vase painting affects both her composition and subject matter. Some vases are predominatly crocheted while others do not contain any of the wire mesh. All contain recycycled computer parts. Works with predominately digital photo imagery are on page 2 of the Amphora Series. Click here to see the Digital Photo Amphora Series.

Dream Filled Amphora was commissined for a specific wall that can be seen from many angles, straight from on top of the landing and at an angle from the bottom of the stairs. The middle section lets the color of the wall show through. Above it was photographed on a black backgdrop and to the left it was photographed on white. Some clients hang work from this series on a strongly colored wasll. They can be designed so both front and back are visable permitting hanging as a divider or on a window. The black simulates what it would look like on a window at night. There are many lenses in this piece which accentuate the ever changing look of this piece. Beads, screening, circuit boards and other found materials embellish the surface.

This artwork has to do with vase as body shape, in this instance the thickening body of middle age. Interwoven are the symbols of loss and what is found. The crochet is used for its transparency but also as a symbol of a stereotype of woman's work and the preconceived notions of what a middle aged woman is. And it will make you laugh... The armature was produced by Mark Moshofsky.
