constructions inspired by totem poles

Fascinated by the underlying aspect of NW Totem Poles- ancestry, hierarchy and connections, Meltzer uses digital photography, crocheted wire, computer parts, hardware and other found objects to build bas-relief wall works and sculpture. A Venus balancing on a beach ball globe; three generations of women nested inside each other; a cat and a mouse all use the disparate materials and techniques to tie the image and the idea together. The juxtaposition of the layers of each work reflect questions about who we are and our relationships to each other, place, objects, memory and history.

Alllusions: Then and Now

Contemporary Crafts Gallery
Portland Oregon

"Bonnie Meltzer first exhibited at Contemporary Crafts thirty years ago. Her work is still infused with the iconoclastic spirit and exuberance of the sixties. In Allusions, Meltzer's installation provides acerbic commentary on contemporary politics. Her live sized figures and constructions are collaged from computer parts, crocheted wire and digital photos".
