Commissions & Ceremonial Works

Commissions are always welcome. Where you live is not a problem considering how the commission process has been greatly aided by the computer and the internet. Drawings are prepared with the aid of a scanner, a camera and Photoshop, Onto a photograph of your room versions of the proposed artwork are drawn to scale. A life size paper pattern is made from those drawings. Proposals can be sent to out of town clients over the Internet via email or on a private page on my site. Of course, if you live in the Portland area or are visiting you can visit the studio.

Ode to Science

computer parts, crocheted wire, heat transfer
open dimensions: 48" x 18" x 6"
Gift from the Oregon Graduate Center to the National Science Foundation

In the fall of 1999 The Oregon Graduate Institute commissioned Bonnie Meltzer to do an artwork for a 50th birthday gift to The National Science Foundation. Her assignment was to make the artwork a frame for a statement written by OGI that was an ode to the good works of NSF. It had to have materials relating to technology and computers. Instead of a simple frame a triptych form was chosen. Besides having the versatility to sit on a desk or hang on a wall and be viewed from many angles, the form of a triptych has symbolic meaning. It is the form used in many religious paintings, and connotes reverence.

The materials used are like a history of computing. There are ancient artifacts of computers and the very latest hard disk. Crocheted wire, copper cables and beads add additional surface texture and interest. A detail of this work appears on the header of these pages and a larger version below.

I will make artworks for your specific needs and desires. The commission process has been greatly aided by the computer. Not only do I prepare the drawings with the aid of a scanner, a camera and Photoshop, I have sent proposals to out of town clients over the Internet.
