Bonnie Meltzer
artist . art educator . web designer |
This work was commissioned by the inaugural graduating class of the Executive MBA Northwest and Beyond class as a gift to the University. It hangs at the Seafirst Executive Education Center in Seattle. I was in communication with all the (22) clients by email. In preparation for creating the design I spent 2 days in classes with them at which time I listened; took digital photographs; talked; and identified an appropriate space. The artwork which is entitled "Connectivity" was hung in June 2000.

The drawing above is a general plan. Details can change as the actual artwork evolves. It would become more intricate rather than less detailed. The construction will be made of a variety of materials adhered to a wood substrate. It will be screwed directly into the wall. Parts are fastened in at least 2 ways per object to insure added strength. The objects are glued, screwed, bolted and/ or sewn. |

IDEAS & IMAGERY |
Below are some of my thoughts in creating this work. I kept in mind the very personal feelings all of you have had but I also wanted to generalize the transforming experience of graduate school. |
|
|
Some text over the doors following the curve of the wood semicircle with the date 2000 in the center. More text could be behind the doors on the copper. All of the students names could be on the backs of the doors. Doors will be on hinges and would be ajar. Someone in the class can write it or I can and send it to you for approval. |

The total outline of the artwork is of a building-- the office building, the factory, the place where business is done. But the word "building" is also a verb meaning to create by forming, combining, or altering materials. Another meaning is making, producing, constructing, putting. To take or serve as the basis for. establishing, basing, resting, founding, seating, grounding, assembling, manufacturing, shaping, framing, molding, fashioning, forging, fabricating is yet another facet of "building" --to build a business, to build a career, to build a life--a perfect image for this project. |

Again rather obvious symbolism of the open doors and windows, works well with building motif. |

Warm copper, reds and other metallics will be the overriding colors. Green and blues will also be prominent to go with the trim in the room and to balance the coppers. Warm colors chosen to soften the starkness of the space. |

All materials shown are actual size. they have been scanned in to the computer. A 125 by 125 pixel section was then selected for view.

Personalize the artwork Make more understandable imagery
Ideas for photos include people working in groups, studying, teaching, & connecting. Perhaps pictures of business and industry not covered by the computer and Internet imagery would also be included.
The photographs will be digitally manipulated so that they are more painterly rather than realistic. |

not actual size Obvious symbolism for connecting. Beauty of the braided cable and visual interest of plugs and connectors. |
