Bonnie Meltzer
Totem Series
This series was created for an exhibiton
at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center in Portland, Oregon.

Fascinated by the underlying aspect of Northwest Native Totem Poles- ancestry, hierarchy and connections, Meltzer uses digital photography, crocheted wire, computer parts, hardware and other found objects to build bas-relief wall works and sculpture. A Venus balancing on a beach ball globe; three generations of women nested inside each other; a cat and a mouse all use the disparate materials and techniques to tie the image and the idea together. The juxtaposition of the layers of each work reflect questions about who we are and our relationships to each other, place, objects, memory and history.
